The Difference between Co-location Hosting and Dedicated Server Hosting

With co-location, you own the server and we host it for you. You can have physical access to that machine as often as you like for upgrades and repairs. In the event that your server suffers from a major hardware or software failure, you will either need to attend yourself or use our services, at your expense, to recover.

With dedicated server hosting, we own the machine. Although you have unrestricted remote access to the machine, you cannot add or change items of hardware yourself. You do however benefit from full hardware support. In the event of complete hardware failure, a replacement server will be provided for you.

Co-location hosting pricing

There are two charges for co-location hosting. They are:

  1. Rack and shelf space - for each item of hardware we host there is a charge for connecting it to our network and for the rack or shelf space it occupies
  2. Bandwidth - We measure the number of gigabytes of data going two and from your machine. We add these two figures together to determine your total bandwidth useage. We then charge a certain rate per GB, which varies depending the amount of bandwidth you book at the beginning of the month.

Cambridge Rack and Shelf Prices

Rack and Shelf Space Monthly
Rack space - per 1U £ 10.00
Shelf space - per ATX midi tower £25.00
Per machine service charge £5.00

Examples:
To host a 4U server it will cost (4 x £10) + £5 = £45
To host an ATX Midi system it would cost £25 + £5 = £30

Cambridge Bandwidth Prices

The rate you pay for your bandwidth is dependent on volume of bandwidth you agree to purchase at the beginning of the month. This commitment from you in turn enables us to anticipate our bandwidth needs and ensure the highest quality of service for all subscribers.

Total Bandwidth Requirement Price Per GB
5GB £ 10.00
10GB £ 9.00
20GB £ 7.50
30GB £ 6.00
50GB £ 5.00

Overage Charges:

We do not prevent you from using more bandwidth that you have agreed to buy. Any bandwidth that you use over and above the agreed amount is chagred pro-rata at the rate agreed above.

You purchase 5GB of bandwidth and you only use 4GB. There are no additional charges or refunds
